What I think of it: | great |
Comments: | I stayed at Dolphin Bay Hotel when I was taking my son to University of Hawaii Hilo. I originally picked this hotel because it is close to the school and is not a big chain hotel. Boy what a great choice I made. John is the best host. He gave me a lesson on how to tell if a sugar banana is ripe. They are ono. The coffee in the morning is so good. Krissy gave me a map the night I arrived with restaurants to try that were in walking distance to the hotel. I told John I would be back for graduation. This time I will request a room with a lanai. |

Comments: | Our stay at dolphin Bay hotel was great. We loved every bit of the time we spent there. John (the owner) and Krissy (receptionist) are very knowledgeable about the island and guided us to see the best on island from north-west to south of the island. Bed was very comfortable and room was very clean. Loved their shower too! This place is a must stay if you plan to visit Hilo. It gives you a feel of wilderness with birds chirping and you can hear the roosters in the morning. It makes your stay in Hilo very Aesthetic... it could be your midpoint for covering the North Shore and Volcano National Park in south... They will give you a good map of the big island! We would love to go back and stay there every time you visit Hilo. |

Comments: | Other hotels (not all of them) here have stopped drains in the rooms,TV doesn't work or is so small you have a hard time seeing. Some have kitchenettes that once you go to get your security back they literally charge you for cooking in the room.Go figure.Tight parking and no real respect for the island or people. Just money. The Dolphin Bay is a very rare find and living here (in Hilo) for three years, we've come to know that it is one of the better known "sweet finds" in the city. My wife and I say The Best in town. Stop in and you will agree...say hi to John and Branon too, those guys rock. Aloha. Had the very best time here.Continued success Dolphin Bay.We'll be back. |

Comments: | My wife and I stayed here for our 5 year anniversary, the first vacation we could barely afford. We really got lucky when we found the Dolphin Bay! The airline lost my luggage on the way there, and the manager took the call that it was found, and drove to the airport and picked it up very early - it was waiting at our door when we got up that morning. We had fresh flowers, frogs on the balcony, directions to the best swimming spots, and we still joke about the overly ripe papaya that nearly fell on our heads in the garden. We have not made it back (yet), but we have told many, many people about this wonderful place. |

Comments: | We stayed at Dolphin Bay Hotel for a week before our children and grandchildren arrived on the big island. We couldn't believe how lucky we were to find such a gem - small, quiet location, and walking distance to shops and restaurants in Hilo town. The amenities offered are a big plus! John and the staff were excellent, friendly and very accommodating. The staff went out of their way to make sure we had the most enjoyable stay possible. We enjoyed the fresh banana bread each day, and the bananas and papayas from the garden.

Comments: | We felt very good in this quiet location with the tropical gardens in a pleasant residential neighbourhood. This is the right adress for those people who don't like big hotels, perfect to explore the east coast and the volcano, with a short walking distance to the shops and restaurants downtown Hilo. John and the staff were extraordinary friendly and helpful. They gave us so many informations about things to do and where to eat. We loved the frogs at night and the banana bread in the morning! Very useful the washer, dryer, flat iron and board. Mahalo for everything!

Here it is again two years after being last year their halau took a break but now are back and the staff at Dolphin Bay again are ever so accomodating to us with taking our reservations for the event which takes place in two weeks. Dtr is competing again and I believe it's a Wendy who has helped us this time around with booking a room. Thank u so much for helping us ppl from Honolulu who scramble around all the time. The gentleman in the front office gave us directions and suggestions on things to do and was very knowledgable. He was always running his legs off! One morning I heard him say he'd made 29 pots of coffee for the guests, BEFORE 9:00 AM. The rooms were VERY clean and comforatble. Everything about our stay was very nice. What I think of it: | Love the volcano photos |
Comments: | Enjoyed our stay in Sept. Pastry and fresh fruit were yummy. All staff gave great tips for places to see (and avoid), best view of the volcano action, good places to eat, and even the quilt shops. They have umbrellas, coolers, boogie boards, etc. to borrow for the day. If you want to view Mauna Kea telescopes, you'll need warm clothes, but there are thrift shops to pick up something if needed. We'll do that next time. The garden is a beautiful, quiet walk. Fans in rooms were all we needed to stay comfy at night. Easy walk to town for shopping, museums, restaurants. Felt more like a B&B. Got to know some of the guests and staff. Would definitely recommend for anyone who wants a true Big Isle experience with no golf course, no pool, etc. |

Comments: | Lovely place - quiet with a nice garden. Loved the papaya for breakfast every morning (and apple bananas when hungry at other times!) Just be sure to ask for a room with a bed away from the corridor light (which is bright). Perhaps the owner/manager would also consider only changing towels if requested? (Other hotels do this by asking guests to hang the used towels back on the rack if they don't want new ones and toss the old ones they want out onto the floor. It saves costs, water, energy and reduces pollution). |

This year I realized that I just had my 24th stay at the Dolphin Bay. I travel a lot, and I have seen many motels and hotels of any kind. The Dolphin Bay Hotel is THE place to stay on Big Island: cozy, friendly, clean, and at affordable prices.

The staff was so helpful, their flower garden was beautiful, they went out of their way to make sure our time was enjoyable and we had everything we needed. WE just wanted a clean place to lay our heads at night, the noise from the crickets did not bother us at all. Matter of fact, I think it put us to sleep. Would definately recommend and come back again. Perfect for the price. |

We had wished that Kilauea was more active (at least above ground), but you can't force Mother Nature! The trip up to Mauna Kea for sunset and star watching was amazing. And the Imiloa Astronomy Center was a great place to visit after the trip to Mauna Kea. The Dolphin Bay Hotel was a pleasure -- we'll surely stay here again when we journey back to Hawaii |

Comments: | Dolphin Bay is a great place with all of the personality you could ever want from a place to stay. Bob took us right up to the room and showed us all of the amenities, pointed us in the right direction with some suggestions and let us settle in. There is a beautiful walk path behind the hotel that has beautiful flowers, banana trees, palms, breadfruit, starfruit, BBQ pit, and a very calming stream that can be heard from anywhere on the property. Night time is very musical with all of the tree frogs, but makes you sleep instantly. If the nature sounds aren't for you check your bathroom for the ear plugs. Morning brings great coffee, conversation, fresh banana, fresh papaya, and amazing sweet bread coconut cream danishes. Trading stories of where to go with other guests is a wonderful way to start the day. Make sure if you are going to use the BBQ at night to bring a head lamp or flashlight and some bug spray, but the overhang will protect you from Hilo style buckets of rain during your stint at the grill. I know for a fact this will only be the first stay of many at the Dolphin Bay. Mahalo nui loa again to everyone that works at the hotel. |

Comments: | Best place ever. We recieved the best explanation of the area from John at this hotel. We were asked what food we like & he drew on their provided map where all types of restaurants were in the area. He suggested things to see & helped us with our itinerary for the 3 days. We compared our stay to staying at our nana & pop's house when we were kids. It felt very homely, it was very clean,& all the little soaps and cleaning products that matter were there waiting for us.
See the lava into the sea at sunset, walk the thurston lava tube, got to the hot springs, go to mauna kea and see the stars. the drive to the later is eary and bare.Safe but be aware its like this. Definitely hire a car, Enterprise have the best rate. Shuttle to pick you up &drop off.
Coffee, tea, banana's, and pastries were provided in a general breakie area. Such a nice gesture. Torches, umbrellas free to use for the stay. Everything was covered. Wished we stayed a week.Felt like i was with family. |

Comments: | The Dolphin Bay Hotel is what the true Hawaiian Aloha Eminates. Having lived on the island of Oahu for five years, it was a treat to bring my family of four to the Hawaiian islands of Oahu and the Big Island. During our two week stay in Hawaii, we stayed in everything from the overpriced, pristine, corporate, marble palaces to the dumpy, overpublisized, under kept, dumps and the Dolphin Bay landed as my favorite place to stay. The warm aloha, morning papaya's and sweet rolls, comfortable, unpretentious accomodations, reasonable pricing, and incredible surroundings offered us the best place we stayed during our vacation. The Hilo side of the island has a true Hawaiiana feel and the Dolphin Bay mimics the noncommercialized beauty the island has to offer. If you are pretentious, you may be better off in the concrete, marble jungle of fancy homogonized 'strip hotels'. If you'd like to get a taste of the real aloha, make sure you save plenty of time in your itinerary for relaxing here! |

Everything was completely clean and tidy and it was kept that way by Diana who is a sweetie herself. Fresh towels daily, fresh coffee in the morning along with wonderful muffins and pastry. They even have fresh bananas and papaya available to pick. We walked the gardens and picked a few mountain apple and ate them on the way to the airport.
The Gardens and the stream are heavenly to see and watch. We have already advised family members about this great hotel for when they come to Hilo.

From the phone call to book our room, until we left the staff was very nice. The room we had was very clean and comfortable and surprisingly a lot bigger than we expected. We loved walking in the banana forest and picking fresh bananas in the 'lobby' and helped ourselves to all the wonderful papayas and cakes. What I loved the most were the sounds that came out at night. It felt like we were in the middle of a jungle. I LOVED it! Comments: | I stayed at the Dolphin Bay for a few days at the beginning of August 2004. It was wonderful. All the staff were welcoming, friendly and helpful, the location is brilliant - close to town and the volcanos but not too near, the grounds are very, very special - fruit and flowers in abundance.
It isn't state of the art but I knew that before I went from the website. It does, however, have everything you could possibly need.
I loved it and have recommended it to anyone even thinking of visiting Hawaii. |

We have never before been to anywhere as enchanting and enticing! We will definitely be coming back just as soon as we can arrange it, and we have recommended DBH to many of our friends.
To anyone looking for a place to stay in Hilo: You just can't do any better than the Dolphin Bay Hotel! John is the most wonderful proprietor and guide, his knowledge of Hilo and the entire island (and especially the volcanoes!) is inexhaustable. He and his staff will make you feel more as if you are staying with your best friends than at a hotel. No swimming pools or five-star restaurants -- just peace and beauty without end! |

Comments: | I am looking forward to spending another few weeks in Hilo with my son Alex. He will be four years old by the time of my next visit in December. I have visited Hilo several times now, as I live in Boston, and Alex lives with his mother in Hilo. It is a wonderful, if a little sleepy, town in the middle of the Pacific, and I can't wait to get back. See you all soon |

Comments: | We recently stayed at the Dolphin Bay. John and his staff were extraordinary hosts.
We loved the papayas, bananas, etc. Walking in the tropical garden was amazing.
The room was clean, neat, convenient and comfortable.
We wouldn't hesitate to recommend the Dolphin Bay and hope to return as guests. |

I've stayed at your hotel several times, the first being
way back in July of 1991 (before the solar eclipse, which
was really Great!). You were always quite friendly and
helpful. I have fond memories of my stays and plan to
return again next year. Hope that you are doing well and
having fun. How is Kiddo the cat? I always enjoyed
getting visited by that wonderful feline, who was a sweet
moocher! Best of luck to you, now and always. Thanks
for helping to make my trips to the Big Island so fine.
Aloha!

Comments: | Aloha, John et al (Ellen, Dennis, Verna, Margaret):
Thanks again, guys, for making my and my family's stay in Hilo special. I wouldn't have thought it possible to enjoy the Hilo side of island - or any place on earth - as we did even while encumbered by rain every day of our visit. It made no difference. The rain did not dampen our spirits or slow us down. That had everything to do with you, John. Each day you made special by instilling in me an excitement and anticipation of what lay in store for us. I felt as if I had my own tour guide, who told us of things to do, restaurants to sample, sites to see and even places to avoid. I'll never forget how terrific you made our visit to Kilauea, even lending us your own flashlights and strobe to get in and out safely in the dark. and your photos of the ongoing lava flow were the best, g. brad lewis notwithstanding. God bless you and your wonderful staff.

Comments: | Anyone who is thinking of visiting the Big Island of Hawaii and staying in Hilo should consider staying at the Dolphin Bay Hotel. Both times I've visited the Big Island I've stayed here while on the Hilo side and they are fun people, glad to make suggestions if you need to know a good place for dinner or some ideas for day trips or just a jaunt up (or down) the coast. Really relaxing and comfortable. Don't forget to take a walk down amongst the breadfruit trees and flowers behind the hotel. |
